2014 Outstanding Conservationist:

Prigge Family Farm

The Winona County Soil and Water Conservation District was pleased to announce Prigge Family Farm (Winona, MN) as their 2014 Winona County Outstanding Conservationist.  The Prigge’s will be honored with state recognition at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, December 7-9, 2014 in Bloomington, Minnesota.

The Prigge’s farm 690 acres in rural Winona, taking great care of both owned and rented land with numerous conservation practices:  Contour strips - alternating strips of corn and hay, residue management - keeping some crop residue on the soil surface to help protect soils from rainfall and runoff, corn-hay rotations on the steep fields, and corn and soybeans on the flatter fields.  Other conservation practices utilized include grassed waterways, grade stabilization structures (ponds) and numerous diversions.

The Prigge’s livestock includes 220 milk cows and 480 calves, steers and dry cows.  In the 1980s they made an improvement in manure handling, building a storage pit.  And on another building site, the Prigge’s recently installed this feedlot runoff control structure.  This structure includes a concrete curb or wall to capture runoff from the feedlot.  There is then a picket fence in one section of the wall to filter out most of the solids from the runoff.  The liquids that pass through the picket fence then spread out and run across a vegetated filter strip, filtering out the remaining solids and nutrients.

When asked about their conservation ethic, the Prigge’s replied: we just do what everyone should be doing.
